Vinga ö

Evert Taube tillbringade sina första femton år på ön Vinga där hans far var fyrmästare 1883-1905.

Vinga är en flack, karg, kilometerstor ö längst ute i havsbandet väster om Göteborg, som sedan medeltiden haft betydelse för sjöfarten, först för flottor på väg till Lödöse, och senare för skeppslaster till Göteborg. Redan 1605 bestämde Karl IX att "märken" och en båk skulle sättas upp på ön.

Vingas första fyr byggdes 1840, vilken dock snart ersattes av en bättre, och ytterligare en ny som sattes upp 1889. Den nya fyren tillhörde första klassen, som bl.a. utmärktes genom en bemanning av fyra personer: en fyrmästare, en fyrvaktmästare och två fyrbiträden.

Everts far Carl Gunnar Taube blev Vingas första fyrmästare 1883 och med denna titel följde ansvar för i princip allt på ön, inkluderat de 30-40 bofasta, den lilla skolan, men framför allt lotsning och bärgning av skepp, stöd åt förlista, och naturligtvis driften av fyren..

Evert Taube skriver om livet på Vinga:

Det var där, på dessa fosfordoftande tångvallar, som vi vingapojkar mötte livet i dess prakt och lärde oss att uppskatta orkaner och skeppsbrott som rusnde stimulanser. Världshavets evaporerande salter gav oss friskt blod och god aptit. Vi åt råa, levande räkor, kuping, hjärtmusslor, och en vit oval mussla, lång som ett hönsägg. Den variant av blåmusslan som lever i vattenlinjen på branta berg var en läckerhet. Allt detta åt vi direkt ur sjön. Men på slånbuskar, hagtorn och nyponsnår stod våra efterrätter dukade ända fram till jul och nyår...

...Nittonde seklets sista orkan jagade in från Atlanten, rev upp Nordsjön i väldiga vågor och vräkte skeppen mot norska sörlandet och Skagens rev. Segelfartygen länsade för sviktande stumpar upp i det jäsande Kattegatt och ångfartygen, som inte förmådde hålla sjön, brötos ner eller drevos mot kusten.

Det tunga salthavet vältrade in över svenska skären och gick till anfall mot kustbandets granithällar med dånet av en kanonrad. I Bohusläns fjordar och sund steg stormfloden.

Bryggor, båtar, bodar spolades bort. Den rasande nordvästen rasade upp genom bergdalarna, välte ner spiror från kyrktornen, ryckte upp ekar och lindar virvlade bort tegelpannor från stugornas tak.

Men bakom fönsterrutorna skymtade händer, som bläddrade ivrigt i bibel och bönbok. Man väntade dödsbudet från havet.
